Those iron staples seem to be one of the two main PC ways to attach a strap to the base of the horn (the other being the holes put through an extension of the horn back there). Do you guys worry about those things working loose over time? Do you glue / JB weld them in place or is it all friction? Do you go through the plug and bend back?

For those of you using smaller priming horns, how are you hanging those things? A single tie point so that it dangles head down? Or do you squeeze another connection point in up front near the spout? Or do they just get placed, sans straps, into the shooting bag?

i got a screw butt plug where the back has a little knob that screws out and i use a wool and cotton strap that is embroidered and leather at the ends with some leather string to hold the back and the leather is wraped around and sewed to the front but thats just my way i have always done it :front:

I'm partial to staples. I cut the head off a finishing nail and then use an anvil and hammer to cold forge the round nail into a square shaft. Next I file a point on each end and then form the 2 legs, over bending each leg very slightly. I brown the staple, hammer marks and all without any polishing. After locating the staple on the plug, I drill 2 undersize pilot holes. Then, for extra insurance, a dab of epoxy on each leg, and tap the square staple into the round holes (neither the holes or the staple go through the plug). I've never had a staple come loose. As to the horn extensions, I made a nice horn one time with a portion in the shape of a heart that extended past the plug with 2 holes for mounting a strap. Looked real nice, but within a year, part of the heart had snapped off. Filed the rest of it off and installed a staple as described, and the horn is still in use.

like one feather, I have a knob in the butt...screws out to fill the horn. I have a leather strap and cut "button holes" in each end, the one near the horn spout I worked down on the horn neck and then sewed it shut..the back one just works like a button hole would. I have made a couple of horns where I left an extension of horn at the butt end and cust a hole there, and threaded my strap through it.
I gave us using a priming horn this year, but used to carry it in a pocket in my shooting bag..Hank

I use pretty much the same technique as "dodgecity" except that I start out with a section of heavy duty wire coat hanger. I heat it up with a propane torch and use a hammer to forge square sides. Drilling undersize pilot holes and using a bit of glue, I haven't had one pull out yet.

Fencing staples work really well. Heat them up with a torch and pound flat. you can also heat the the center and turn to obtain a nice decorative twist

My staple is hammered in pretty well and it shows no sign of working loose. I have a small loop attached to my horn strap and my priming horn rides snugged down into it.
