Veg Tan?
Oil Tan?
Depends on what ya got.
If it's stiff stuff then I'd say yes too thick for a bag, more suited for a box.
If it's soft and pliable then I don't see why not.

Good answer. I have some commercially tanned buffalo leather that's around 1/8" (8 oz), and its soft temper makes it ideal for bags. I also have some 8 oz. veg tanned that I wouldn't use for a bag on a bet.

It likely would be dandy for making something like cartridge boxes if you're interested. For sewing heavier leather, I sure recommend this book. It's about the best money a guy can spend when starting out with leather, especially thick stiff leather.

Yes it's on the heavy side but if you have it you can thin it down by sanding from the back side with a belt sander and then to make it more flexible, oil well with a good saddle oil or EVOO - DO NOT over oil which can and will turn it into big floppy mess - apply in light coats on both sides and let set for 8 hours, then fold/roll it in both directions to work it....

+1 on the links from LaBonte & Brownbear and I would add a recommendation for T.C. Albert's book "Recreating the 18th Century Hunting Pouch". It has just enough pictures and just enough words and some great patterns. -Flint
