What is the best material for making a frock got a pattern coming and would most faberic store handle it thanks

Best material? Coarse linen, and it is EXCEPTIONALLY unlikely that the local fabric store would carry ANY linen at all. Burnley and Trowbridge.

Most people will make them from readily-available canvas, which is fine, if absolute historical correctness is not a factor. Definitely cheaper...

I have some herringbone hemp that I'll eventually use to make one.

i was wanting one made of canvas for colder days out hunting ought to make one out of linen also dose any body have pictures of theirs this would out on style and era iam just getting started where is the best place to get material

Check 96storehouse.com for linen. They seem to carry many weights and colors. My wife recently got some really nice linen from them for a round gown and they are good people to deal with.

If you're really going to wear your frock on a hunt, I'd avoid canvas like the plague. In the brush canvas or any other hard fabric sounds like a playing card in the spokes of a bike.

I think it really depends on the canvas you use. I currently wear one that was made from a canvas drop-cloth from Lowes' that isn't stiff or noisy. The weave is looser than some canvas, and does look like coarse linen (you can tell by the weight that it isn't). I will be making one from linen that I picked up at JoAnn's very soon to replace it as the canvas isn't very tough.

Here's a link your gonna want to check out... http://rendezvousclothing.com/ Ms. Virginia Parker made my frock coat out of Osnaburg and its very period correct and she cut and sewed every stich. She makes all kinds of period correct clothing.

Go take a look,
