After harvesting my first flintlock deer last season, I turned the hide into buckskin and made a hunting bag out of it. The finished hide was on the stiff side, so while not the best buckskin for moccasins, it makes a superb bag. I dyed it using black walnut dye that I made from walnuts I collected. I also tanned and attached one of the deer's ears to the back of my pouch...

The knife I ground out of a bar of 1048 (1/8" thickness) carbon steel, and slapped a curly maple handle onto it held in place with iron pins. I stained the handle using aquafortis, and sealed it with wax. I field-dressed the first deer of the season with it the other day, and it works like a dream.

Looks like some fine work! Like the ear as a decoration.

I've always thought of attaching a tail, but the danger of having anything hair/fur on my hunting accouterments keeps me from doing it. After all, I just read that some moron in NW Minnesota shot a bull moose because he thought it was a doe whitetail!!! :youcrazy: The fact it was 15 minutes after closing time, which would mean 45 minutes after sunset (DARK) might have accounted for some of the error!!! :shocked2:

Good grief - that's a pretty bad mistake :shocked2: . But I guess one can never know what some trigger-happy hunter is going to do :shake: ...

.

You've done an excellent job - something you can be proud of !

:hatsoff:

:hatsoff: Nicely done bag and knife combo. Even nicer considering you tanned the leather and made the knife. Keep up the good work and enjoy the ride! That bag looks like the perfect companion for "Nathanial" (hope I spelled that right).
