Many years ago the late Eddie Penzig, author of articles and books on Colonial history, guns and on Bushrangers, had a small museum and bought a burr walnut occasional table and when he showed it to John Kell, who was a master carpenter and joiner, John showed him that it was painted, Eddie was upset until we pointed out to him that what he had was rarer than the real thing and suited his Colonial theme in the museum.
There were lots of faked timbers in furniture but very few that were very well done.

So please don't beat me up but I have a Lyman Deerstalker flinter and I love it. I also love tiger striped guns. Has anyone ever striped a deerstalker? I can't seem to find any in any searches...perhaps because it's never been done?

Painted on stripes are always going to look painted on. If you want it to look natural the only way is to buy a nice piece of wood.
I have seen a few of what they call super premium maple and to me they look like they have been painted on the stripes are all so even. Leman obviously used a special brush because you can see a pattern of 8 stripes of different widths and spaces on the stock. If you look at the curl on most rifles the stripes are all different widths and there will be open areas with no stripes. I used several different brush widths and actually tried to make it as uneven as possible so it would look very close to the real thing. Not trying to pass it off as real because I told the guy who bought the rifle it was fake. I had planned to do this to the Transition style rifle that I am working on now. I ordered this stock blank as a CM2 with the intent of seeing if I could add curl what it would look like. Well as I work on it this thing has curl pretty much the length of the stock. Gotta love Pecatonica they always seem to send a better grade than I paid for.
