Have you ever been asked to march in a parade in period correct clothing and gear, while make lots of smoke shooting blanks?

Some people have all the fun...

I'm still waiting to be asked... :shake: :haha:

MM,
I was asked to leave a St.Patrick's day parade
once does that count
I think it was because I was a snake and you know how
us Irish people feel about snakes. I think it was reptile
profiling. I know it could'nt have anything to do with the cheer
that day.

I was asked to be the Grand Marshall at a 4 of july parade once, ( for the Veterans float) I couldn't thou, I was too busy ridin round tellin people which side of there float the American flag goes on,, It was a small town out west,,

that id be my only purpose in life,
our timeline of the american soldure was put togeather from a bunch of different groups, thats the only way you can scrape up all the uniforms and bodies, mostly we only do parades, with maybe show and tell afterwords,
the one weekend event we do is the estes park highlands festaval, which I guess is the largest one now.
I will try to get some pics posted this week.

Marshall, the county seat of Madison County NC has a Thanksgiving parade...for a number of years we were asked to march in period costume, and, as we approached the review stand the Master of Ceremonies would ask us to fire a blank volley...it was a good PR opportunity...more than once, I've had a mother or father walk alongside me and point out to their kid, "that's the kind of gun my granddaddy used to shoot...." we're not a uniformed re-enactment group, but could generally scare up enough buckskins or rifle smocks to make a good appearance...often had a wife or two in period dress with us...Hank

If I had a dollar for every parade I've taken part in - Well I couldn't retire, but I could keep several of my closest compadres supplied with beer for a long weekend.

Belonging to almost any local hysterical (historical) society will get you "volunteered" for more public events, parades included, than you can shake a stick at. Also, traveling to nearly any small town for a presentation/demonstration during their local annual <heritage> celebration will get your butt stuck in the local parade so fast it'll make your head spin.

I've been part of gun fighting troups who staged a gun fight in front of the grand stand, and I've done the Mountain man thing complete with 100 grain (for the BOOM! ), toilet paper wadded blanks.

Lots of fun! One word of advice though: Do not wear moccasins in Christmas Parades in the northern climates!

...The Kansan...

Yeah, I've gone through a few parades. NOthing like hikin' a couple miles on pavement w/ Jefferson bootees or mocassins to make you appreciate what the original's had to go through. We we not allowed to fire in Cheyenne parades, as they were afraid we would scare the horses. Another group I was with did a skirmish fire in a military parade once; still recall the Navy officer hurridly trying to get out of the smoke to save his dress whites.

Have been in MANY parades but have never been asked to participate in muzzleloading period outfits. (I used to be a band director so marching in parades was part of the job.)

Now that you mention it, I wonder if the reason we haven't been invited is because the guns, knives and hawks would be cause for "concern?"

Hmmm. I can see us marching now.......here in Kansas......John Brown, Quantrill, Custer and the Indians, followed by Carry Nation! ::

If you continue to do what you've always done, you will always get what you've always got.

Yup, 20 or so Highlanders marching down the Main Street in Alma Michigan (big Highland festival) in one mile we shot 18 rounds of blanks, a full box!!

Not to mention dodging the road apples if the organizers are inconsiderate enough to put the horse soldiers in front of the infantry ...
