Okay. Things have been pretty stale around here lately. I just had to get out of the house to put a few rounds down range. The weather forecast was near perfect...the wife agreed to ride along (she's disabled--please no hen-pecked replies)...I figured it being mid-day on a weekday, I could go to the state range rather than driving all the way to the farm... MISTAKE #1! There were three guys shooting already and they had a car load of handguns, shotguns and rifles! By the time I got to the bench, I was ready to see that 16 ga. fowler pattern well at the 50 yard target and I had hoped to even fire a couple at the 100 yarder just for laughs and giggles...but, OOPS! That's not easy to do with no patching! BIG MISTAKE #2! I had it all, but somehow grabbed the pouch set up for using it as a scattergun. I scrounged through the box and found a pre-patched ball in one of those PC/HC questionable wooden items that dangle from the neck or pouch strap. Okay there's one shot...next I found a scrap of ticking that was suitable under the circumstance for shot #2, but that was it. You know it never bothers me having to clean a BP gun after a day's hunt where I fired one or maybe two shots, but this is the most grueling effort to clean a gun I've ever experienced. I think I need to get out ASAP for a do-over so I can forget about this one.

I now know how bad the guy felt, thirty years ago, after firing his ramrod on the first target of a trail walk. Most times someone else would have a spare cleaning rod somewhere, but this poor lad had the first 46 inch barreled gun I'd ever seen up close. No one there could accommodate him.

Anyone else ever had one of these days?

Hmmm, not really. I woulda been cutting the backs out of my car seats for patch. Or my socks at least.

Loyalhanna, like the creek? And the Fort!?

:rotf:

I once watched a mountain man cutting patches at the muzzle from the tail of his calico shirt on a trailwalk. It left some amusing round shapes cut from his shirt.

Hey, I did that once, tails of an old flannel shirt on a trail walk....That one wasn't due to forgetfulness, but due to very poor shooting in events prior to the trail walk!

I call that an Oh-sh... or more recently considered to be having a senior moment!

Don't feel to bad, tried to go shooting at my local range the last two times (during the week) and it was full (i needed the 25 yrd target). Waited to see if there was an opening but no luck, lots of hunters sighting in for the opening.

At least i did not have to clean the rifle.

'round here busiest range season is the last weekend of September through first weekend in December. Really, don't even bother trying to go then...

Yes, it's busy during that time here also.

Alden,
Well today I got there again and, surprisingly, there was only one car there. They spooked off since it was pretty obvious their intentions weren't going to comply several ways with the state's range rules. So I ended up with the range to myself for nearly an hour and a half! Great weather, I had everything with me this time and I shot pretty well, especially considering the strong cross wind I had for the 100 yard shots. I drug the old rifle out too. Despite 1000s of rounds(over the years), it grouped very well at both 50 and 100. The smoothy even hit what I was aiming at 100...not that I'd try that on an uninjured deer, but it's good to know should I wing one! Anyhow, like you, I never thought I'd even get on this range today, but it was great.

Afterward, I took the Mrs. for a ride out along Laurel Ridge to "see the leaves"...which she really appreciated. We don't need to tell her it was also to scout for tree rats and deer!

I guess I got my do-over after all.
