Do any of you have a pattern for a leather Cow's Knee breech protector? Thanks

Hey Juggernaut:
search the site for "cow's knee" and I bet you'll find what you're looking for.
here's a link that's currently on another thread. click here
For my 2 cents, you've already got the pattern in your hand. just lay your rifle down and trace around the lock and wrist; cut out two pieces and stitch 'em together. that's what I did and I'm pretty happy with the results. Regrdless, there's a nicely detailed pattern in the thread I linked to.
good luck, and be sure to post a pic when you're finished. :hatsoff:

Juggernaut:

In " The Mountain Men " by George Laycock there is a layout of a cows knee before the sewing of it, page 174. He calls it a calfs knee. A couple dimensions and a discription are included. I don't have a scanner or I could scan it and send it to you. Sorry. Perhaps you can get access to the book at a book store or library.
snagg

The ones I have made were from rawhide, (think big rawhide doggy bone from Wally World) soak in water until soft and pliable. Then wrap the lock/wrist area with Saran Wrap several times to protect. Form fit the wet rawhide and trim a bit over size, (it shrinks) then reform to area. I secure (not too tightly) with wide strips of rubber bands cut from old bike inner tube and allow to dry in place.

After drying, I apply pure tung oil both inside and outside to weather proof, allow to dry and use 3M adhesive spray to attach a felt liner inside to prevent chaffing wear.

What I like about making them this way, they are custom fitted and the dry rawhide is like spring loaded, no ties are required, and they snap readily off and on.

I made the neatest hawk sheath this way, it snapped on and off brilliantly, but. . . I never waterproofed it
after the first rain it was a soggy mess!
how well does the tung oil protect the rawhide?
also, where's the opening for the lock cover. . . under the triggerguard I'm guessing?

The tung oil did great, shed rain & snow with no problem. The opening was rounded to curvature below the wood, but did not enclose the trigger guard

Very interesting, I will give this a try.I figured if I messed up give it to the dog. Of couse before I water proofed.
Thanks Juggernaut
