The first was a 50 caliber CVA Hawken made in 1989 which means it should have the 1-66” twist barrel. These are few and far between on Gun Broker, so I hit the “Buy it now” button without asking any questions. I forgot that CVA made some models so that you could interchange the barrels, 50, 54, 58, and 12 gauge. Needless to say, this one is 1” across the flats. I thought I was buying one that was 15/16. It’s a little front-heavy but should handle recoil better. I replaced the modern adjustable hunting sights with fixed. I don’t know why but the previous owner painted the rear sight black while it was on the barrel. My first thought was that the paint was covering bare metal or worse, rust. With a little Acetone and 0000 steel wool, the barrel is back to normal and found blue metal underneath! I polished the Frizzen bottom and pin plus the top of the spring. She sparks good and quick now!
The second one is an older Lyman Deer Stalker with Diamond sights. The new ones come with Fiber-optic. The previous owner on this had drilled the touchhole out to 1/8th, probably for better ignition.
Both guns cleaned up real nice! I’ve got a few days of sunshine here in the Pacific Northwest so will be working on outdoor projects. I won’t be able to take them out for testing until Thursday. Thank God for covered ranges!
