I went to the local wallyworld today and talked to the sporting goods manager. The only black powder guns on display were inlines. I enjoy centerfire weapons, but for smoke poles, I want a side lock. If I want a bolt action, I will get a bolt action centerfire. Enough of that talk though.

Anyway, we walked in the back and he produced a CVA Bobcat. It had a small spot of rust on the barrel and was missing the wedge pin. He offered it to me for a deal, and I am contemplating it. The metal parts seem fine. The stock looks like it was made by Mattel though. Yes, it is the synthetic stock version. I have heard some comments that they are good shooters, and if restocked in wood, they make nice guns. Well, I want to see what they look like when done that way. Anyone got a photo handy?

Wal-mart carries a full line of CVA, traditions ,lyman side lock weapons , all you have to do is ask for the special order cataloge

Well, truth be known, right now the budget is so tight that Abe screams each time I have to spend a penny. That being the case, the $50 wonder from Wallyworld has appeal. Plus, if it can be made to look more respectable by restocking it in the future, all the better. That is why I want to see photos of a refinished one.

Well, finally found my antique digital camera and got some pics for you. This is a CVA plainshuinter kit, same parts as the Bobcat so everything is interchangeable. First pic is full view of both Bobcat and the kitgun for comparison.

Sorry for the yellow tinge and glare- combo of old camera, bad lighting, and worse eyes.

Hope it gives some idea of what a block of hickory can do to a 50.00 rifle.

Thanks guys! That is what I wanted to see! I think that I am going to wallyworld on Monday to see if Santa will give me something early this year!

I'm assuming the wood stock would bring the weight of the bobcat up substantially, is the plastic stock hollow?

The heavier stock will make the gun more stable and you can duct tape the old plastic stock to a broom handle and make a canoe oar...
