If a .62cal Flintlock goes off in the woods, does it make a noise?

Sat down at 3:30 thinking they'd be moving earlier and wasn't there 15 minutes when 100yds off through the trees I saw three white flags go bounding through the bottom...no noise, no hunters around, never heard a dog, etc.
30 minutes later a small herd of families came wandering across the bottom...not a horn in the bunch...4 Does with their yearlings best I could tell...when a grown Doe got within 30-40yds I popped her in the chest with the .62cal Flintlock. Had her out of the woods and on the hitch haul while it was still light enough to see.

"Ole Bull Knocker" my .62 Jager flintlock is my favorite huntin gun. It was built for me in 79 and has accounted for a lot of venison. What kind of load do you use in your .62? I've always loaded mine kinda on the heavy side so when it goes off it makes heap lotta noise.

Here's one from this year, that tuff of hair is where the ball hit.

It's pretty thick where I hunt and most shots are only 40-50 yards so I'm not loaded for bear...I settled on:

80grns Goex 3F
Oxyoke .018" prelubed pillow ticking
Rush Creek .595 cast ball (from TOW)

Congrats again roundball! :hatsoff:

How many deer HAVE you killed with muzzleloaders? Just curious. :hmm:

whoever built that gun did a poor job the patchbox is on the wrong side

Congrats Roundball!! :hatsoff:

Y'know I never seem to here the shot when I'm the one doing the shootin'. . . . . . . But I'm sure I would hear a .62 if I was close by :shocked2:

Well, we get 6 deer tags with our NC licenses every year (4 Bucks/2 Does)...we have a good deer herd, I'm lucky to have some good land to hunt, and I've worked pretty hard at it with muzzleloaders for about 16 years now...a couple years I didn't fill the 2 Doe tags.

Thats nothing, they put the lock on the wrong side too.

Naw they just turned the negative upside down when they made the print. :v

WOW! So if my math is right, sometime in the next year or 3, you're gonna be at 100 deer with a muzzleloader. :hatsoff:
I'd have to hunt until I'm 100 to get anywhere near that many...
Gotta apply for each tag and hope you get it. We can apply for one each of antlerless-only or either-sex, firearm or muzzleloader in April. Then in September we can apply for any leftover tags if there are any.
Firearm(shotgun/handgun) and ML seasons are both split and overlap. 10 days total if you get both kinds of tags. 7 days for each season, 4 of which are the overlapping days.
Then we get 3 doe days in mid Jan.
Well, good luck filling however many tags you have left this year and may #100 be a real monster buck!

Congrats again Roundball!
Hunting In NC must be a Ball!It makes our one Deer a season look pretty small but at least I don't have to sweat when dragging a deer out up here. :winking:

Congrats to this nice doe. Am I right it is a yearling or in GE we would say a calf or "Kitz".

Where could I get a .62 barrel for a Investarm Hawken ?

Need a bachelor's degree to figure all that out!

It's really simple the way NC has it set up...I buy an annual "Sportman's License" for $40 which gives me full hunting & fishing statewide and it includes hunting permits on hunt state game lands.

Comes with the 6 deer tags which can be used in any season such as bow, ML, gun, etc...and includes 2 turkey tags, plus bear & boar tags...a lot of value for a little money.

I got the .62cal GM Flint barrel new this year and I am only hunting it this season...got an 8, a 6, and two Does with it so far...the problem with nearing the end of the season is that the bucks have gone back out of sight, and usually only show themselves right at black dark when I can't see the open sights...Does usually slip out a few minutes earlier and get themselves tagged !
Good luck in your season

Counting deer in the zoos I have been to, I haven't even SEEN as many deer as Roundball has killed with a muzzleloader!

Man, I need to get out in the woods more...

Congratulations on another successful hunt!

What roundball didn't mention was that, in eastern NC, Bow season begins 10/1, followed by a week of muzzleloading, with the regular gun season running from 10/15 to 1/1.

The varied terrain in conjunction with a lot of agriculture has resulted in whitetails being numerous. The down side is that, by & large, the deer are smaller.

After reading the forum for a while, I'm beginning to realize that we've got it pretty good.
