I shot my .69 Charleville smooth bore on Sat., and man was it a hoot! I finally came up with a good combination of:

- .662, 425 grain round ball
- 0.10 patch
- 70 grains of 3-fffg Goex in the bore and a tad in the pan

I know 2-ffg is the preferred powder, so I kept the load light with the 3-fffg. The most fun was fixing the misfire. Flash in the pan, but no "boom". To resolve I papercliped the flash hole, recharged and it worked the 3rd time.

What a blast!

If you do not put a feather or pick in the touch hole before pouring in your powder, you should pick a hole in the charge through the touch hole with a pick before priming the pan. It insures that there is more than one granule to ignite from the heat generated by the burning prime, by leaving a long hole that exposes many granules of powder in the chamber. You will get faster ignition, but will also have to use 5-10 grains more powder, using FFg in the gun, rather than your current choice of FFFg powder. And, don't try to compact the powder in that flintlock. That also makes ignition slower.

Thanks Paul - That's a good thing to know. I'm sure I've been pushing down til it crunches :) Have to try a lighter touch. GC
