The idea has been overly-romanticized and more people today carry them, but it would be unlikely that many whites in the period would have owned/carried a tacked gun. Having one might suggest that you had killed its native owner which could prove to be detrimental to your health...
 
As the old settler said to the Indian as he was dodging a slew of arrows, "You got a good point there!" :grin: :hmm:
 
Would the tacking be an owners identification marking or just purely decoration or in place of notches or what ? O.
 
Might be purely decorative but most likely were significant to the owner in some way.

From what I can tell, the tacking patterns are a mix of decorative and possibly mystic or spiritual. We as a society have a tendency to read too much into some native markings and, by the other direction, may not understand the specific meaning of any symbol marked item to it's owner. A few symbols are known while many others may have significance only to the owner...then again, it might just be pretty! :wink: :haha:
