Several years ago I came into a .40 cal roundball percussion offhand rifle. The top flat is stamped "John Rein New York" (two lines) and the left side flat (covered by the forearm) is stamped "Great Western Gunworks" which I believe was a Pittsburgh, PA supplier to the trade. The rifle is nicely proportioned, has a walnut stock with brass furniture and pewter forend cap, unmarked bar lock and DST. All iron parts browned and 95% original finish remains. The rifle seems to have been assembled from parts on hand or ordered from parts dealers, little evidence of extra work put into it beyond putting it together, i.e., "field grade".

The only reference I've found indicates that John Rein had a shop at or near 105 Broadway in Manhattan in the 1860's. Any additional information about Rein or his business would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thank you, Squire Robin

What reference is Stockel? I am not up to date on lists of gunmakers.
