A while back, I was surfing the web and came across this rifle:
http://www.rooseveltroom.com/Rap2061.htm

The lock says Raper Leeds on it which is intriguing. My last name is Raper, and this is the first example I have seen with the name Raper on a firearm. Does anyone have information on that rifle or the maker? Would be cool to know that there is a gunsmith in my lineage. Would be even more cool to own it, but that is not likely to happen due to the cost...

Hmmm. I looked at the photos again - can anyone suggest a kit rifle that can be made to look like this one?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Well I did a little research and it looks like a Brown Bess carbine to me. Am I right?

Looks to be an officers calvary carbine. Many officers commisioned their weapons built for them.Very nice piece, maybe Robin will see this and chime in.

Must be Benjamin Raper from Leeds, Yorks in Great Britain. Working the period 1823-37. Maybe Robin has more info to give.
ARILAR

Pedersoli of Italy makes a Brown Bess Carbine. Looks close to the one in the picture though the trigger guard is shaped a bit different and is brass. I have the Brown Bess Indian Trade Gun that Pedersoli sells through Dixie Gun Works. You can buy it in kit form.

Me :shocked2:

I looked for him in DWB's list of small arms contractors to the Ordnance and he wasn't there. OTOH it has an EIC cock held on with an ordnance pin, no little lion or crown so I think we can assume it's a commercial musket?

OTOH you don't think it has a bit of re-enactors drop about it do you :hmm:

Probably okay, I'd certainly buy it if it was a HEWITT

I have a birthday coming up, and showed it to my wife. Her reply was "I can buy a lot of furniture with that" :(

Pork Chop - you have a normal wife. Most women will see their husband's chattel (personal property) and convert, in their minds, romantic dinners, cruises, vacations, new clothing, furniture, car... Most just don't share our appreciation for old guns, bags, knives, tomahawks, etc.

Yeah, I know. I still think it would be pretty cool to have an original rifle with my family name on it. Oh well, not today...

So you reply, "But I have to have it, it has my name on it, I might never get another chance".

Then you argue for a bit, then you say, "You don't understand".

I know it doesn't actually mean very much in man speak but it has a deep meaning in girl speak

I assume American girls say, "You don't understand", I think it's fairly universal.

If she says it to you, DO NOT ANSWER, "I'm trying to understand", or you will be in big trouble. Just stop arguing, shut up and walk away :rotf:

Sage advise, and if things were different, I would be doing just that. The problem is that a couple of years I became self-employeed, and the money isn't exactly rolling in right now. That being the case, I cannot justify a $4000 toy.
