Can any of you tell me anything about this mint condition rifle I just picked up? It has none of the usual black powder warnings etc. on the barrel. It is stamped A. Uberti & C. Gardone V. T. Italy. It is a half stock .50 caliber plains rifle of high quality with bright luster blue job and very nice stock finish. The lock plate is casehardened with fire blued hammer, butt plate and trigger guard. The rear sight is a buckhorn leaf adjustable plains rifle type with silver blade in brass front sight. The barrel is 15/16 and 29 inches long. It is not a Western Arms or Uberti Hawken as it only has one stock pin and I used to have one of those in .53 caliber. Thanks for your response. Thanks, ET :idunno:

Might it have been called a Frontier or Mountain rifle? The hawkens generally have a patch box and the Frontier or Mountain rifles didn't.

That looks very similar to a kit I built back in the 80's.

Wilded:

The "Third Edition Blue Book of Modern Black Powder Values" doesn't mention very many rifles made by Uberti.

It shows a "HAWKEN RIFLE" in .50 or .54 caliber but that model has a 32" barrel.

The "Santa Fe Hawken" in .50 and .54 caliber also had a 32" barrel with a "damascened finish".

It also shows a "St. Louis Rifle" that was available in .45, .50, .54 and .58 caliber.
The barrel length of this model isn't given but it does say it has a color case hardened trigger guard, meaning the trigger guard was steel.

As I'm sure you know, almost all of the factory "Hawken" rifles have a brass trigger guard so that might be a clue.

Based on the values given I think this gun must be a St Louis Rifle.

Uberti is known for its high quality guns so your new rifle should be a "keeper". :)

Zonie thank you sir. The trigger guard is for sure colored steel. I just can not find much information on the rifle but it does appear to be very high quality. ET
