A single 1/2oz container of Inletting Black from a typical supplier is enough to do about 5 gun kits.
https://www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/PartDetail.aspx/377/1/INLET-BLACKIt's a transfer agent,, it doesn't need to be "BLACK" when it transfers,, all you need is a shadow of an imprint to remove the offending wood.

p.s.; "soot" works very well in 2023 just like it did in 2005 and 300yrs before that!.
try it.

I'd say that 5 complete rifles on one can of inletting black is conservative, and I'd say that is conservative by 2-3 rifles......

It’ll last me for at least 100. Probably more. It just sits in a drawer in my tool box.
Hate Jarrows.
Soot is easier, cleaner, cheaper, and it washes off.

Buy yourself a cheap oil lamp. Should not cost more than $20. Buy either a pint of kerosene or lamp oil (purified kerosene). Remover glass chimney (easy, just lift off). Light wick, let burn on bench top while inletting. Easy to use and will last a lifetime. Soot is an EXCELLENT inletting black.

I bought mine in 1966, priced 2/3 - two shillings and three-pence. It's not gone yet and I've built ten steam locos using it.

Has anyone added anything to inletting black to basically have more so not to run out during a project?
Find it hard to run out of inlet black or Prussian Blue. A little goes a very long way. If you are ‘out’, Prussian Blue should be available at your local auto parts store, maybe $5 - $6. Likely in stock.

I'e built over 200 guns with old motor oil and an acid brush. When I still used black, I always ended the day looking like Little Black *****. I had it everywhere.
