Inside of horn??

When putting together a horn is it recommended to clean up the inside? If so what do you use/do?
I did not boil this horn as I used a heat gun to get the butt plug to fit.

I never have, other than to be sure it's free of any lose particles. More experienced horners may have better advise.

dependant on how bad the inside of the horn is, you could takes some bleach and run it through, just be sure to rinse thoroughly.

I've never heard of anyone else doing it this way, but before I even start on a horn I like to put about half a cup of #3 steel shot in mine, cover the end, and shake heck out of it. This does a great job of cleaning the inside, and even polishing it to a degree. There are certainly other things that would work too, but I haven't tried them.

Actually Brown Bear, I have heard of this as well! I just never bother to do it! :haha:

Fill horn with hot water then drop in several denture cleaning tablets. [like polident] Let horn sit for about 30 min, pour off a little liquid and scrub inside of horn with a bottle brush. Rinse and dry.

If there are loose particles or dust, I use my circa 1759 Sears air compressor w/nozzle attachment and blow the thing out and go! ... After all, your not going to eat out of a powder horn ... or are U!..... :rotf:

That extra stuff is only filler anyway,just go to the range often,,shoot lots,,, it will clear itself in short order.
This isn't rocket surgery,,it's saltpeter mixed with sulfur and charcoal....don't get to scientific,, gives you a head ache!!!!enjoy...

I never even considered doing anything to the inside.

Mostly, whatever is in there gets cooked when you heat the horn in the lard to reshape it. If you do a primitive by fitting the plug to the horn, then your handling and use of a holding cone scrapes/rubs the inside fairly well. Seems like a non-issue.

Works for me and it's handy. I've never boiled or heated a horn to reshape it, rather I fit my plugs to the natural shape.
