I am very new to this and I have read almost every post over the last few days. So new in fact, I still haven't shot my first round since my local gun store still hasn't gotten in my .50 cal balls. Anyway, I was inspired by a post by stumpkiller where he repurposed an altoids can. Since I'm a Scout Leader and have a bunch of these laying around from a survival kit making clinic we recently did, I decided I needed a break and had to make one.

Made a quick fire in the back yard to get some coals going then spent about 10 minutes with a hammer banging out the lid. Here's a pic of the end result after about 20 minutes in the coals, a quick rub down with a 0000 steel wool the a little light oil. I loved the way it turned out so I just made a few more. I'm going to replace my regular altoids can that I keep my fire building stuff in with one of these too. Looks so much better.

Looks like it turned out nice .
I`ve got one of those tins laying around that I plan on reworking like that. Also a few round cap tins. I use the cap tins in my shooting bags to carry my prelubed patches.

nce I saw the original thread by Stumpy I started scavenging for little boxes wherever I could ... now I widened the search to boxes, crates, bags etc... it's adictive! :surrender:

New Guy..
You just took the first step down a very slippery slope.
Sorry no redos..
your in!
Enjoy your crafting time..nice job on the tin..they are very useful for patch lube too!
need to seal the hinge holes first   ...don't ask!.... :rotf:

Yup.. as soon as I seen the original thread by Stumpy I did the same as you..I have about 4 now I've burnt off and hammered out..easily done, they're very useful and they look GREAT! A VERY cool idea from Stumpkiller!

Great looking tin !!

I am starting to put together my first possibles bag, and I think that a couple of tin like that will be a good for patches and misc items.

I will look up Stumpy's post to get the fine points

I'm glad I am not the only person who hunts down these little tins. My daughter thinks I am nuts when I take her empty tins. Useful for all sorts of little items.

I found out that some of the lead pellets for air rifles come in great tins. After you burn off the paint you can beat out the lids if you want, japan them or just leave them as they come out of the fire and oil them a little.

I know what I am going to be doing the next time we are sitting at our campfire. Awesome guys!
