I am interested in mountain men rendezous I am in civil war reenacting and been intrested in rendezous for awhile I know a club is near me but my main question is what equipment I would need I have a kentucky long rifle and I am looking at a hawkens so what other stuff would I need and what clothes would I need looked at crazy crow magazine and it got me thinking would I need buckskin pants or what kind thanks

Typical drop front britches or pants are fine and a common drop sleeve shirt will get you in the gate at many a vous

Plain cloth [wool, cotton] fall front trowsers will be fine, available from Crazy Crow, Jas. Townsend, etc., for not too much money. Don't jump in and get leather clothing right away. Leather can be expensive, and correct [braintan] leather is even moreso.

Both companies sell decent shirts, they're available in plain white, solid colors, or checked--your choice. If you've done CW reenacting, wear your Jefferson brogans--no need to get moccs until you know what you want. Some kind of hat or cap is good, but nothing wrong with bare-headed, either.

A long rifle is just fine. Don't worry about a Hawken--unless you just have to have one (I know how that goes  ), as the common longrifle was the gun of choice anyway. Do you have a bag & horn? No need to get fancy there, either, in fact plainer is better.

A simple narrow (1 1/2 inches or so) belt with a plain buckle, with a common butcher knife and sheath will be best. Don't worry about a capot (another expensive item), just wrap up in a blanket for the time being.

What I'm trying to do here is point you in the right direction for reasonably correct clothing and gear without too much initial outlay. That way, you can get your feet wet and find out if you like the fur trade era. It'll give you a good basis to expand on if you find you want to continue, but you won't have a lot of useless or incorrect gear if you decide to progress.

I agree with Rod on this. ( I usually do, Hi Rod)

Get yourself reasonably and inexpensively attired and try to attend a local rendezvous and get the feel of what others are doing. You will get ideas from other's camps and clothes and equipment. Try to weed out the wannabes from the real deal guys. If you are thinking of spending your cash on clothes and equipment read up on it first, don't just go buy stuff because you see someone else with that stuff. I have a couple of boxes of worthless stuff that I bought from traders and catalogs that I now wouldn't be caught wearing.

Local small rendezvous are usually pretty forgiviing of a pilgrim's gear. Don't make a "Primitive" rendezvous your first eperience. You will not have the stuff needed at least for a while. Go slowly, pay attention, ask questions.

Notice the word "stuff" comes up often in these conversations. You can et caught in the trap of accumulating a lot of stuff. At one time I was going to weekend rendezvous with a truck and trailer loaded with stuff. I've since learned that less is better.

Read, read, read and then read some more. Ask questions and avoid buying stuff on impulse. A library card (or computer for Google books) will be your most valuable asset.

Remember, just because everyone has one or uses it, it doesn't mean it is accurate....

You've got that right---sometimes I get asked what I've spent the most money on---guns? saddle? clothing? traps? Nope---I always tell them "the books"!

Simple cotton breeches and a colonial work mans shirt and moccasions will get you in the gate. Then look around and see what goes in your area and check the trade blankets. The sad fact is there are more of us getting to old to rendezvous as mauch as we used to, and to few getting started. So trade blankets are the way to get your self dressed reasonably.Or you go in with just a loin cloth if you want to start on the elcheapo! :idunno: :idunno:

jr most vous run a time period of 1700 to about 1840 so its a pretty wide spread of time,as others have said do a ton of research before buying anything, first ya need to decide on approxamately what roughly 10 year period ya want to portray. That by itself will really help you narrow down your choices of what is available and what you might need. All the advice so far has been great, usually I tell guys starting out to leave their wallets at home n go to a couple events on public days n walk , watch, n ask questions, then decide what, where, when etc that they want to do. THEN start to buy stuff to camp. This site is an awesome place to ask n learn, even if most of us are getten long in the tooth LOL Been doing this crazy hobby for near 30years n still love it, the mind n heart say go but the ol bod says no hehehe, but I still make it out a coule times a year, hate to say it but now I'm pretty much a fair weather camper.
