Hi guys,
I came across an interesting and intriguing YouTube video to solve cap jams problems in open top BP revolvers called a Quarter Cent Cap Rake by the author. An elaborate way to modify the revolver frame but appears to work quite well by his demonstration. Has anyone ever modified their revolver by this method to prevent cap jams? Click on the 6-1/2 minute video below. The music is a nice touch to the video.

My first thought is I wonder how long a piece of zinc will last. Why not use steel? I can't argue with the end results, though. That was very impressive.

The music was a nice change from the standard noise heard in most videos.

neat
I learned a long time ago how to cycle to the next chamber without worrying (most the time) of a cap falling in and messing things up.

Raise muzzle up and there is a deft little side flick of the wrist as you thumb back the hammer. Send the caps away easy peasy the majority of the time.

Now having a modification on my revolvers that precludes the need for concern would be nice. But I suspect I'd likely still do it due to muscle memory.

Just filling in the slot on the hammer with Acraglas, which causes the cap sucking to begin with & adding a set SliXshot nipples accomplishes pretty much the same results. Worked like a charm on my Colt style replicas.

I had Mike Brackett of Goon's Gun Works do mine while he was tuning the gun.

Yep, that's the method I've used for over 40 years, with no cap jams I remember.

Just let the revolver's muzzle rise under recoil, and flick the shooting hand's wrist as you cock the hammer on the way back down into firing position.

Could you remind me what that hammer notch is for?

It acts as a rear sight when the hammer is cocked...…..

I have never experienced a cap jam bad enough to render the revolver useless
how are they useless? the video showed them performing flawlessly? did I miss something? please explain useless? I am confused.

why didnt Colt address the problem? they had to know about it. they made tons of pistols with that problem and it would be easy for them to apply the fix while making the gun

I take that back. I miss read your post. I apologize. I agree with you I have never had a cap jam that I could not clear. just a little bump in the road.

I meant that I have never yet experienced a cap jam bad enough to bind up the revolver to the point where I could not continue to fire it (without having to resort to tools and/or disassembly)
