I bought Investarm/Lyman Plains Pistol cal .45. It is a nice piece and I just love it. But (there is always a but!!!! ). Hammer head is off the centre of the nipple muzzle. Hmmm. See picture Plains: Pistol.45_2a.jpg. Is that bad enough to send her back?

The other discrepancy is that the rifle bore is NOT all the way down to the nipple muzzle. See the picture: PlainsPistol45_0007b. Ramrod shows the way of the bore and the thinner rod show the smaller bore down to the nipple muzzle. Is this normal with the muzzleloaders? Or only Investarm/Lyman has this?? What if I will use light load and there will be empty space between the ball and the powder? Shall I use filler?

Any experience with this nice pistol is welcome!

Hello from GE.

The problem with the non centered hammer on the nipple is not really a problem. When the ignition is without problem I won't send it back. You couild try to fasten the holding screws a bit. Perhaps it works.

The second thing is also no problem, but a must. The barrel is never going down to the area of the nipple. The barrel has in this area the patent breech or powdersack. This is a little chamber where only the powder fall in. the bullet couldn't get in there. You have not to use only light loads. The plains pistol can be shot with 30 to 40 grs FFg or PP bp and a .533 RB with 0,18 or 0,20 mm patch. I think it is a good and straight shooter, according to the rifles which Investarm make. So don't mind. One other tip. While the nipple of the Investarm guns is a bit thicker use the czech Sellier and Bellot 4,7mm caps. They ignite without any misfire.

A law question:

do you need a permission for ML and BP in Slovenia?

Sorry: Give the wrong caliber. You have a .45.
So take 20 to 25 grs FFFg or PPP and .440 RB. Patches unchanged.

Snip, snip, snip, ...

A law question:

If one have a gun-licence there is no problem to purchase any BP muzzleloader. The law say that per one gun-licence he/she can purchase two pieces of BP firearms. The law do NOT say that one can have ONLY two pieces on one gun-licence. This is a hole in our gun-law. You can interprete this article that one can't buy more than two pieces at a time :blah: . I can purchase today two pieces, tomorrow two and so on  . I have three pieces now and two on the way. After purchasing dealer must send announcement to our authority and buyer receive BP registry paper.

If one haven't a gun-licence he/she must pass gun-handling course and medical exame or must be a member of shooting club or a hunter.

As for black powder: it is an explosive and we must acquire an explosive-licence for black powder: we must present proper BP loading and shooting in presence of authorized person. It takes about 10€ for licence.

What is the case in GE? Can I purchase a BP and/or muzzleloader by mail from GE??

Have a nice smoky day

Hello,

thanks for the answer.
In GE all single shot ML pistols and longguns are free for people at a age of 18. No permission needed. even caps and bullets are free. for the BP you need a licence and have to make a similar course as you in Slovenia. Futher you have to show that you have a need for the powder, normally hunting or targetshooting in a club is enough.
You certainly can order a BP single shot gun from a GErman Trader. Exporting of ML is possible without any difficulties.

From where do you come in Slovenia?

I am from our capitol city Ljubljana.

What I wrote in my previous post the same is valid for revolvers, too.

We have only one public range here in Ljubljana, but lately I was invited from my fellow hunters to come and show them a little about BP shooting in the other places. I am just waiting my new rifle to come and than I'll show them a little smoke.

I'm from southern Bavaria, about 40 km south of Munich. Are you allowed to hunt with ML in Slovenia? What rifle will you get? I have a Investarm GPR, cal. 45 and a Investarm Hawken cal. 54. Further a Traditions/Ardesa flintlock Kentucky pistol, 2 tower pistols, all .45 and an old army revolver .44. I have ordered a .50 deerhunter from Traditions in the US which I will use for hunting roes. Me and my guys shoot at a range in Rosenheim. Do you know the german SPI-Schwarzpulverinitiative, black powderinitiative, www.schwarzpulverinitiative.de?

If you do have ignition problems you might try a shorter nipple. It's hard to tell from the pictures, but it looks to me like the hammer is hitting the rear of the nipple first. A shorter nipple would help correct the angle.
Another thing you could do would be to grind the hammer face where it touches the nipple first. Use a dremel tool or similar and work slowly. Keep checking the fit until it hits square all the way around. You can use a piece of paper to check. Lower the hammer with the paper between it and the nipple and see if the resulting mark is a full circle.
Good luck.

Icy;

Don't worry about the hammer as long as the pistol fires. My Plains pistols don't line up perfect but it has never been a problem.

I think the Patent Breech has been explained. Just use and under size brush to clean this area.

In Slovenia it is not allowed to hunt with any BP firearms... I ordered Interarms Great Plains Rifle .45 cal (32" BBL) percussion. Also have Uberti's Walker and Remington New Army model 1858 revolvers. I also ordered Uberti's Colt Navy 1851 London model... Nice page I guess, but ... I do not understand German :shake:

The BIG question is is the undersized Patent Breech part polished or not. If it is not it is natural to accumulate fouling! :hmm:

I have a Great Plains Rifle in .45 percussion, too. It is a very straight shooter. Use selfcast RB's with 0,12mm lubed patch, wad and 75 grs of WANO PP. Get one hole groups with 3 shots at 50 meters.

I was actually seeking for Uberti Hawken .50 cal rifle but my Uberti importer said that this fifle is no more fabricated. :( Can you take a peek in GE if there is one left somewhere dusty in the corner in NIB or in mint condition?

What type of mold are you useing for casting balls? Brass or iron? Who is manufacturer, etc, etc, ... :winking: Where are you buying accessories? Frankonia or local shop?

I was reading your other thread regarding troubles with thin bullet patches. Are you useing thicker patches now?

I use a Rapine primitive mold for the .45. Makes .445 RB. Becauseof the burnt patches I use now wads between bp and PRB. It brings outstanding results. 20 mm with 3 shots at 50 m. Most equipment I buy at local traders, try www.gebu-waffen.de, things which I can't get there I order in the USA at the Log Cabin Shop. Things are much cheaper there than in GE, also they have to be shipped so far.

For my other cals I use the LEE molds. they are priceworth and good.
