I am SORTA looking for a pistol. Side lock .50 cal. At THIS time I do NOT want to start buying a whole new pile of stuff to shoot; I already have a small handfull of T/C .50 rifles and would like to add a pistol that uses the SAME stuff like Pyrodex RS powder, musket caps, and of course .50 cal PRB. Is that a resonable request or am I sucking mud thinking that I can do that?
AND any suggestions to a nice enough looking functional pistol?

Thank You!!!

Sounds like youve been having a frustrating experience friend. I just bought an extremely nice flintlock pistol from oldarmy and I've been SO impressed that I've ordered two more from him as well as a rifle. I dont know what he knows about sidelocks, but you can contact him. I've been EXTREMELY happy with this pistol. Hopefully he can help you out. Look for him in the members list.

Traditions Trapper comes to mind real quick!

fairly accurate, double set triggers and ok+/- sights.

50 cal, shoots same ball/patches as my mountain rifle, and yours!

Another vote for the Lyman Plains Pistol. I've stuff RS,P, 2f, and 3f using #11 caps and it goes BOOM every time I pull the trigger. The trigger could use a bit of work; but if you are not looking for Competition grade pistol than I recommend the Plains Pistol.

I really like my Traditions Kentucky. It balances real well and I have been getting great accuracy. They only offer the .50 now. For another $100 Pedersoli makes a more PC version with a longer barrel.

You've got two good recommendations on 50 cal pistols that will throw those round balls you currently use with your rifles.

I hear you about wanting to simplify. I sold 4 guns this year in part for the same reason.

I like 50 caliber

I like 54 caliber

I like 12 gauge

I like 22 cal (for practice, and to address those garden thieves who come in the night)

With those four (4) there is only one more thing that any true blue gun lover actually needs in life---- a four bore BLUNDERBUSS!
:rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

I have a trapper model as well as a lyman plains pistol and like them both. I usually carry the lyman in the field as it carries better. However, the trapper model balances very well and the trigger spur really helps me "hold on." If I could only have one, I'd go with the trapper model.

THANX All! I have been eyeing the "traper" at my local Sportsmans Warehouse...Some day...Some day pretty soon :hmm: :hmm: :hmm:

Wattsy,

Check the Lyman Great Plains kit. Goes together real easy and shoots well.

I have a companion .50 capper to my .50 capper rifle (actually the first BP gun I bought, a CVA kit), you won't regret getting one IMO. if anything more fun to shoot than rifle!
