Going to the range this weekend and will be shooting real BP for the first time in my life. I am looking to find a hunting load for my TC White Mt carbine. I was planning to start out with 80 grains of goex FFF and a 298 gr powerbelt. Thoughts anyone??

It would help to know the caliber barrel length and the rifling twist.

There were some posts a while back about powerbelts, you might want to do a search. Any reason you don't want to try PRB or pure lead conicals? They are a lot cheaper to shoot than powerbelts (PRBs in particular).

Do yourself a favor and go with 2F in 80 grains and roundballs. I have a friend that tried powerbelt in his TC and couldn't hit paper at 25 yards. The old sidelocks weren't made to shoot powerbelts.Ssettle

I understand that the White Mountain Carbines come in either 1 in 38" or 1 in 20" twists. T/C made both, some with QLA muzzles, and all with 21" barrels. It would help to know which twist rate this one has. If it is the 1 in 38 it may well shoot round balls with a relatively low charge weight, and conicals with a heavier charge. If it is a 20" twist it may never shoot round balls well, but the shorter conicals should stabilize with light charges, and the long one with heavier charges. I'd start with 50 grain charge weights and try 5 grain increments on the increases. Good luck, and let us know the results. :v

Wink,
Trade,sell,giveaway or throw away the
powerbelts and use PRB.I don't know at what
ranges you intend to hunt, I keep mine within
50yds, due to the terrain I hunt. I use 75grns
3fff Goex, with a .490 lubed patch. If I do my
part, this is a very deadly combination, in my
.50 cal Hawken with a GM barrel 1/60(I think)
twist.
snake-eyes :hmm:

Hey, Wink, congratulations on a fine beginning.

As stated, not knowing what caliber, barrel length or twist is like asking us if you should kiss (---) or not. We'd kind of need to know who she (or... whoever?) is.

Times short if you're going out this weekend, so let us know ASAP!
