I placed my order for an Isaac Haines component set from Dunlap this morning. They're close to me, so I can pick it up on oerson once the stock is carved and all the parts are in. Should have it in about 30 days. I talked with Wayne briefly, but I dealt with Daniel for the majority. Really nice guys. They even said I could secure the order with a credit card number, but they wouldn't charge the card unless absolutely necessary, and I can pay in cash when I go pick it up.

I went with a 38" Rice barrel, B profile in .50 cal. Chambers Deluxe Siler lock, Davis triggers, and on their grade 6 stock. I know brass was the thing for hardware, but I dont really like it, so I'm going with iron/steel hardware. I can't wait to get started. It'll give me something to keep me out of trouble this fall.

Good luck, I'm anxiously awaiting a Haines kit from Chambers (submitted my own wood which I think would be similar to your grade 6). Hope that we both knock them out of the park.

My first build was a Chambers York rifle back in about '07. It was a great kit that I turned into an okay rifle. It was my first time to use hand tools to any appreciable degree, including any serious use of chisels and carving, and I was...optimistic...about my skills. This will only be my second gun build, but I've got about 12 more years of woodworking experience - including a few electric guitars from scratch. So, I hope to have both more capability and more realistic expectations.

I hope you indeed knock it out of the park. A Chambers kit should put you in a good place if you have better skill and patience than I did. I'll be quite happy with a solid double!

Yep, me too. I still consider myself mostly a novice gun builder, but I have far more faith in my abilities, at least as an assembler, than when I started, probably around the same time as you. I'm still anxious about a lot of carving and engraving, but I suspect I can handle the kit without too much trouble and that I'll be happy with the result.

My cousin a while back traded for a Isaac Haines Lancaster Style built by Jim Chambers. He really likes it and says it's his favorite hunting rifle. A few months back he was in NC attending his sons wedding and where he was staying was close to where he was staying so he dropped it and got to meet the man who built his favorite hunting rifle....Now that's cool!

Have fun building yours and when finished enjoy shooting it. It is neat shooting something you built. I still enjoy shooting the one I built over 30 years ago.

Thanks Dave! I read through that this morning, and like all the comments in it noted, it was really helpful in detailing problem areas and in setting up the process.
