Got the lancaster done except waiting on patch box release button kit. Put stain on then inlayed a German silver star.didnt have to sand much at all. Stained around the inlay with same solution and sequence. Well there was a halo around inlay about 1/2 in. Wide. Short story the dull flat halo would not take permalyn. Sanding cleaning no matter.
Rubbed with heel of hand and lps oil hard and fast getting wood hot. Eventually it seems to be ok. Anyone else had this. I remember how much I like a hand rubbed linseed oil finish. It's a pain but all the rubber I ng and heat just works real well.

When you installed the inlay , did you stick it down with super glue ??? If super glue gets on finished wood , stain won't work on it. Pete G. is correct.

Nope sure didn't. I'm thinking between sanding it smooth ,,,steelwool,, and polishing it with this jewelry polishing cream, I had impregnated the wood with whatever. I've always used the sandpaper,, steel wool and polishing cream on all my guns and never had that dead halo around the inlay.
I still lay part of it on the wood.It had a really weird area by the heal and one area below buttplate return left side,, then there's the right side it was just weird all over that side.
Gotta blame something. LOL
