This might be of interest to the reenactment members
but the lantern was posted on another forum,its English late 14th century horn faced,I made the copy of one held in the museum of London.I also have a folding rush light holder if anyone is interested.

Don't know why, but, I've got a thing about early lighting. Could we have some details please. Also, I'd like to see the rush lamp...Bud
 
Thanks for your interest ,The lantern measures 10" inches x4" it holds a single bee's wax candle,it throws a good light when its very dark ,but we must remember these were used before light pollution,my guess is they kept the door open when indoors but closed it when moving around,As for the rush light & candle holder,this also dates from the mid 14th century.

The rush is first stripped of its outer skin leaving a small section to hold the pith together its then soaked in what ever fat you have to hand it is not a very good light ,I used a wax taper to demonstrate the rush holder .
