I think I have a touch of BP fever, my very first muzzleloader just arrived this weekend and I have not even had a chance to fire it yet, but I am thinking about trying to build one.
I've been poking around a bit and saw some of you like the Turpin video a lot, I was wondering how much cross over there was between
"Assembling the Chambers Rifle kit" and "Building Muzzleloaders" both by Turpin? I am thinking of trying a Chambers kit, and I am a novice but I think I'm up to something more than an "In the White Kit". I have a few books on order (titles I picked up nosing around here) but I am a product of the video age!

Thanks!

i only had the first video on the list and this forum to help me build my rifles .every builder has their own unique style or process when it comes right down to it .so even though they may over lap with the basics of gun buildingthey will allwasys incorporate a particular step/s hat work best for them .
to sum it up watch all the videos you can get hold of but keep the chambers video close to hand simply because your building his rifle

Not sure if I understand correctly, but, the Turpin video is dedicated entirely to building a Chambers kit.

Turpin has done four gunbuilding video's.
One with Jim Chambers, on the assembly of a kit gun.

His Building Muzzleloaders Video,, describes building an entire gun. (flinters )
Building Muzzleloader 2, describes the building of percussion rifles.
Building Muzzleloading Pistols, is video 3 and shows his effort at building 5 different pistols.

He talked at one time of doing an engraving and/or carving video. The last time I was at his shop, he was gearing up to build flint SXS doubles.. His guns are absolutely beautiful!!

Any questions, contact him through the Primitive Arts Video, web page..

I highly recommend that you not only watch Turpin's videos but that you set up your vcr in the shop while you are working. Im told me recently that they are planning for DVD's, but I am not sure when they will get them. However, one good thing that I have discovered in the VHS version is that when you stop the tape and walk away for the night or even to just get a smoke, you can come back and it's still there where you stopped it.

We did a review in the magazine on his whole series for our December Trade Blanket. I loved the whole set. I really wish I had seen them before I flubbed my first gun.

Ron Ehlert's video is now out on DVD. Jim Chambers had them on the shelf when I was there a month ago.

Not to be discouraging, but if you just got your first ML, you are a long ways from building one. Be like looking at lawn mowers & saying, oh heck, I'll just build a NASCAR car...

Shoot the rifle for 1-2 years, buy 2-3 more rifles, & then entertain building one. I have bought 3-4 started rifle kits for 1/4th price off guys that thought they would build one & jumped to early & too deep & couldn't do it.

As far as the James Turpin video, it is great for a guy that is about to build his first rifle.... Otherwise, I have found it to be a good tape to watch if I am having trouble sleeping, as I can't make it past 1/2 way & I am gone..... :results:

what bd6 says makes sense, before you build a gun it,s best to fully understand what and how it works.
even a kit gun requires an eye for detail such as fit, proportion etc.
theres a great satisfaction in building and assembleing your own b/p gun,but first you have to learn to walk before you can run.
once you build your first gun it,s just a matter of time before you start thinking of your next project
it's addicting ,but there is a learning curve with b/p guns,a journey if you will ,and it starts with the first step.don,t cheat yourself
