I have a 54 cal smoothbore colerain bbl. 44in.and I don`t know if it jug choked or not it takes a .526 .010 patch and I do need a short stater to load it. How do I find out if it`s jugged or not.

When you run a cleaning patch down the barrel with a jag, there would be a loose place about 2 inches inside the muzzle that would stay loose for 4-7 inches, and then constrict back to what you feel in that first 2 inches, if the barrel is jug choked. I doubt seriously if anyone would go to the expense and trouble to jog choke such a small gauge gun, other than for testing purposes. As in the modern .410 caliber shotshell, the shot column for that diameter of gun will be so long that choke is not likely to improve the pattern thrown by the gun no matter what constriction, and what load is used. There are some very sweet .28 ga. ( 55 cal. ) shotguns out there that throw beautiful patterns with cylinder bore and modified chokes. However, they are not known for their ability to throw good patterns with full chokes. Once in awhile a gun will do so, but more often than not, the full choke is just too tight for the column of shot.
