how much should be removed from the barrel?
Depends on how much choke effect you want.

For example, I've had two different .20ga smoothbores Jug Choked...one Full as a turkey & trap barrel, the other Improved Cylinder PLUS (halfway between IC & Modified) as a general purpose dove, duck, crow, etc type of barrel.

The machine shop put a .025" expansion chamber in for the Full choke...and a .015" chamber for the Imp Cyl +.

And mind you this was for .20ga...I got the impression from my gunsmith that it might not be the same for every gauge...I say that because of his comment when we were first discussing it...when I asked how much would the expansion chamber have to be enlarged...he thought out loud and said "Well, for a .20ga...."
And that suggested to me it mnight be different for different gauges.

PS: There is some science to the design of the jug choke too...the overall dimensions and particularly the step-down taper back to full cylinder bore an inch shy of the muzzle.

Roundball, who did your jug choke? I have a 62 smooth bore that I would like choked to modified or full choke. Thanks for the reply. Leon

This is true, Lowell Tennyson jug choked a 12 bore fowler for me and removed 0.035" to give a full choke.

Right there in Iowa:

Mine are removeable GM Flint barrels...he had me remove the rear sight, underrib/thimbles, and wedge pin tenon...as I understand it, he taped the breech end of the barrel and mounted it in the output shaft of a lathe, then has a hone mounted in front of the muzzle, gets the barrel spinning, moves the hone into the muzzle end to a certain depth and touches the hone against the bore wall as the barrel is spinning around it...measures the amount removed, does some more, etc.

Then he moves it a step back towards the muzzle and does some more, then begins the taper steps, etc.
Each barrel came back in perfect shape and they work as advertised...the full choke barrel dropped a turkey at 40yds, and another at 30yds like they'd been hit with a sledgehammer...turned out the lights on a squirrel at 30yds as well.

No shot cups, just powder, wad, shot, and card...

Thanks, Roundball. I just talked with Lowell, and he can't do my barrel. When I ordered it I had the under rib and thimbles silver soldered on. But that gives me another reason to get a third barrel for the gun. Leon

Ask Briley in texas. They are the best shotgun barrel smiths in the USA.
For example one barrel machine & thread, with three choke tubes $195.00, so a basic jug choke should cost less.

P.T.Coyote Joe he has a hand tool that that he uses to Jug choke and it kicks butt. Better than any other jugchoking I have ever had done.
Here is my 20 smooth with a coyote joe full choke using 80 grns of ffg goex and a ounce and a quarter of # six at fourty yrds.
