Rebuilding a jukar spain kentucky rifle and was wondering what type of open iron sights would fit the dovetail cut into the barrel. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Measure across the barrel flats (at the muzzle) that should tell you what size barrel you have then we can go from there. Should be 13/16ths, 15/16ths or 7/8ths.

I believe the dovetail is a metric 9 mm but I could be wrong.
The size is the measurement of the widest area of the dovetail and 9 mm = .354".

The normal size for sight dovetails in the US is 3/8" which equals .375". That means if a US dovetail sight is going to be used, something has to change.

It's best to file the sight dovetail down from .375" to .354" rather than trying to increase the 9 mm slot in the barrel. Why? Because if something gets goofed up in the process, getting a new sight is fairly cheap. If the barrel dovetail gets messed up, buying a new barrel (if you can find one) is expensive.

file the sight not the barrel
a little tap on the barrel with a ball peen hammer right around the dove tail will tighten them up if needed

my rear seems to be about 3/8 but my front is smaller .354 would be close I was not the original owner of this rifle so it is possible the rear was made bigger

I used a Marbles peep for the rear and like it Marble's Bullseye Rear Sight 2-3/4 Double Step Elevator .338 to .535

a triangular saw file you can grind one side flat so that it only cuts the one side

Since most Imported rifles are "metric", you should be able to order one from Traditions or another maker.

Was given a tin of #11 magnum percussion caps and was wondering if the magnums are ok to use on a jukar spain muzzleloader.

My dad made this rifle for my 14th brithday 49 years ago. Still have it and it shoots just fine out to 100 yards. I did change the sights on it with Williams firesights that are made for spainish barrels. I use Black MZ and CCI# 11 magnum caps with no problems.

If you want to put the original sights back on the gun you can probably get them from Deer Creek. They are the same as CVA kentucky sights.
