Pawn shop find, it has a low front sight that appears to be soldered on and shot about a foot hi at 15 yd. The breach is a snail but not hoked and barrel is pined. There is about 6" of rifled barrel. Is there another option to dove tailing a higher front sight. The sights (triangle front and V rear) would probably be closer if I could see well enough to take a very fine bead. I tried 20 gr of FFF goex, 440 ball and pillow ticking patch and will try 25 and 15 grains next time out. Am not looking forward to cutting a dove tail but think I can handle it if necessary.

I've got one of those pistols. Mine had a round barrel and no sights. I soldered on a front sight and dovetailed the rear. Soldering was easier than filing a dovetail.

Be sure to try different loads before messing with the sights. My POI changed quite a bit when I dropped the powder charge down to 25gr of 3F.

sounds like the earliest of the CVA Colonial Pistols. Is there a small strip of wood between the bolster and the lock plate. The later percussion models switched to a drum and nipple and slightly better lock.

Yes there is a 1/4"+ of wood between the lock plate and the nipple extension. Am going to spend some time this morning at the range and shoot for groups with different loads. and patches. Gun is nicely finished and barrel is polished and browned. Just wish the front sight was taller.

I might have the same pistol, posted on it some years back:http://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/233935/post/718846/hl//fromsearch/1/#718846

I eventually made a new front sight by cutting down a nickel, and soldering it on. Painted the nickel black and it made a great improvement.

In addition to shooting the maxi-balls well, it also likes 15 gn of fff Triple 7 under a prb.

They are capable little guns if you work with them some
