have any of you used kasenit to add color to a lock panel or any other hardware using a torch?

Kasenit is not the stuff to use for color. Charcoal from bone, seeds, other stuff is what you need.

Kasenit adds carbon to the surface of the steel part so that it will harden when quenched.

It leaves a rather plain gray looking surface until it is tempered.

The tempering color will depend on how hot the part is heated to but you can get these tempering colors without using the Kasenit because they don't have anything to do with the amount of carbon in the steel.
