Kibler ordered

Hello you builders!

I have a kit coming and have not ever done a really NICE kit and was under some weird BP influence when I ordered and got EXTRA fancy maple so I don't wanna mess it up. I have heard Kiblers are basically ready to but together and stain and be done. Then I heard of folks and chisels n such. Last chisel I used was in 1974 in shop class in jr high!. So I wanna get a few and wanna know what size and brand so I don't get a harbor freight looking build!

Then there the browning of the barrel. I always used Plum Brown and put the barrel in a longish gas grille to heat. Suggestions on browning?

Look on YouTube for " Kibler's Longrifles" He has very detailed videos on how to assemble his kits.
I think he has even made the kits easier to assemble since the vids were made.

Ordering am extra fancy maple SMR kit myself next week.

I think they set of chisels I got was around $50. I also had another set I picked up on sale for something similar, just to have around. You really don’t need great chisels for this kit, just make sure they’re sharp

I put together one of the early SMR kits back when you had to do a bit if final inletting because all of the inlets were slightly undersized. I don't think I used much more than an 1/8" and 1/4" chisel. I had bought a set of Flex Cut gouges and a complete set of Lee Valley chisels early on when I built my first rifle 10 years earlier but found most of these these to be unnecessary for the Kibler build.

I also used a few riffler files on the Kibler build to fine tune the inlets.

I only buy chisels and files one at a time as needed.
Many things get thrown into sets for a small price, but if you don't ever use them, it wasn't a bargain at all.

What Ames said! I get mine one at a time, either from Highland Woodwork or from Track of the Wolf ... getting sets is a compleat waste of money ... get the very best single tools you can ... if you're enamored of sets, build a nice box for the singles ... (then you can spend more time in the shop ... don't see a downside ...

also, if you haven't already done so, figure out how to get your chisels super sharp... neurosurgery sharp ... don't-look-at-them-or-you'll-cut-yourself sharp

yes, i will cop to being an enabler ... tell your significant other that it's all my fault ... the .58 colonial lost out to the SMR by the narrowest of margins ... i'll probably blow a house payment on one later ... gotta save up my egg money ...

I built my Kibler last spring and I’m pretty sure I could of just used an Xacto knife with a regular and a chisel blade.
Although I have some nice chisels I used, they really weren’t necessary. It’s mostly cleaning up the inletting and a little fitting, particularly the butt plate. Kibler really does an exceptional job. A couple files for metal work, along with a drill and you’re good.
I used LMF browning solution on mine.

Several weeks ago Jim Kibler described his next flintlock to be offered......over on American Long Rifles. It sounds like it's about 75-80% along in preparation for production.
It's called "the woodswalker" rifle.

I just received an SMR kit yesterday in ash. Right now the lock will need work to get it to fit in the stock. But all I did was check and make sure the kit was fine. It will sit here until the June class at WKU. Plenty of time to acclimate. And it may or may not need much work to fit then.

As a note, I am always looking to improve my tools. Woodcraft emailed yesterday and they have a number of chisels back in stock. And they can be purchased singly. Just saying. I do not own any stock in them.

If it was me and I wasn’t going to be building the kit for a few months, I would clamp the barrel into the stock to prevent possible warping issues.

I just got my 36 cal. SMR yesterday. Very nice kit and should not be too difficult to build. I was really happy with the wait time , two weeks. was expecting much longer. Now waiting on the chisels ; "Two Cherries" brand..

Suggestion from a new guy. Why not have a Kibler sub forum? They are such a popular kit, that I'm sure it would be helpful to all Kibler fans. Just my .02 cents.

Information has been in MuzzleBlasts for a number of issues. And on the NMLRA website at NMLRA Gunsmithing Seminar — The NMLRA

This year's classes may be set in stone by now. Or maybe not. A phone call to Brenda at NMLRA will get you up to date information. Look in all the publications as there are a number of classes offered by different people in a number of states.
