Kibler SMR lock finishing

I have another question to ask. Should the lock of the Kibler SMR be sanded or polished before I apply Jax black? I am trying to finish as closely as possible to an original circa 1820. Any help with this is greatly appreciated. Also, I want to thank you for tolerating my inexperience.

I am certianly no expert. That said, the few examples I have seen were sanded or polished smooth, so I did the same to my Kibler SMR.

I’d do like Tacitus does or use cold blue & knock it back to a gray (that might in fact be what he had done).

Beautiful finish. The gray color is what I'm after.
