I can only bench shoot and have a 50cal Flinter now. I shoot at 50 & 100 yds and have a great time. I would like to put together a kit and was hoping to stick to 50cal for the sake of not having different ammo. The two kits that I like have different barrel options. In one I can only get a GMT barrel in 50cal and another a higher priced barrel in 45cal only. I only want to do this one build and have a really good or as good as possible bench rifle. Help please

There is nothing wrong with a Green Mountain barrel. They are among the best.

Actually, I'm a bit puzzled though. Most of the barrels out there which are bored for a .45 can also be bored for a .50. In other words, for a straight barrel, the .45 and the .50 both come in 7/8, 15/16 and 1 inch octagons.
Of the swamped Colerain barrels (except for the Jaeger which doesn't come in a .45) the same external size can be had in either .45 or .50 cal.

When all is said and done, my suggestion is if you want a .50 then by golly, get the .50.

what Zonie said... get what you want the first time, get it the way you want it. don't compromise. i've had good result with Green Mountain. Colerain, although more expensive, are also very nice. Long Hammock are less expensive, and the internal finish is nice, but i haven't shot it yet, so i can't speak to that.

good luck

If I was going to build me One Rifle and I wanted the best barrel, it would definately be a Jim Goodoein barrel.........

As far as the 2 dif. calibers (45-50) I don't see what the problem is. You order or cast some of each & you shoot them, it is not like it is a issue....they are just bullets....
I have 32, 36, 38, 40,50,54,58 & 62 here & that it is not a big deal either..... you just get the ball & the rifle & ya go shoot it. I LIKE having dif. calibers to shoot. Shooting all the same thing all the time would bore the H out of me !

The issue of having two different calibers isn't really a big issue with me. My main question is will a good 45cal barrel be accurate out to 100yds? I have lots of time on my hands to do a kit and want to do it right. Sure wish I knew more about different Flintlock Blackpowder types of rifles. I have spend quite a bit of time looking at different kit sites and they offer different calibers and manufactuers depending on the kit selection. One style stock that one may like may not offer the barrel/caliber one would want. I guess the best thing for me to do when I get ready is call TOTW and Chambers. All of you are great help to all us newbies.
Thanks, xbowman

Sure a .45 will shoot at 100 yards.
For some time, a .40 was the caliber of choice with a lot of very good shooters and their competing at 100 yards (along with shorter distances).

The .45 is a little more sensitive to cross winds than the .50 but accuracy was never a real issue as far as I know. :)
