Okay this is a safety bulletin. Let this be a lesson. Any good knife maker knows one of the axioms of working with a sharp knife is to tape the blade. Carelessness cannot be tolerated, because it will come back to bite you. Following is an example. Take heart.

That is my little finger a week after spending two hours in the emergency room and getting five stitches in my little finger. That blade caught during drilling, spun and filleted my finger. Don't be stupid and take shortcuts. BE SAFE!!!

:shake:

ALWAYS clamp your work down - you were lucky - I've seen even old pros get hurt far worse thinking they could hold a piece by hand - one was stabbed in the chest and collapsed a lung when the blade was flung at him by the drill...Still I'll bet most knifemakers have pulled this stunt one once in a while and got bit...
IMO - the only tool more dangerous is a buffer - lots of scary stories.........

Truer words could not be said. My neighbor use to have a electroplating shop, lots of buffing and polishing was done. Every week there was a new hole in the wall or a piece of metal sticking in the ceiling or floor. Always keep your mind on what your doing and don't get lazy and take short cuts. You can replace a piece of a project, but its hard to replace a body part!!! Oh,keep that finger clean I hope it heals soon so you can get back to it.

Glad it wasnt any worse for you ! one of the biggest saftey issues are polishing flap wheels and wire wheels ,if any of you use them please be carefull. One of the guys on anothewr forum made mention of using the flap wheel and the way he was holding the blade the wheel caught it and the knife ended up sticking in the ceiling lucky for him it didnt hit him in the face and or neck .

BTW last time I needed stitches it was done on the kitchen table at my brothers house without any anything to numb it :cursing: think I wore the enamel off my teeth he thought I did pretty well :(

Learned that lesson. The hard way.

When those bits grab, the work spins mighty fast. Yes, flapper sanders too... 1 clamp, 2 is better.

I am starting to really appreciate had crank grinders... from 24" down to table top ones. You can get those at garage sales cheap, cause nobody wants them. They have a 3/8" arbor, but if you put on a 3/8 bronze bushing you have a 1/2" arbor that will take a ordinary hardware store wheel.

OBTW, I use blue painter's tape.

Man that hurts to look at. Do keep it clean, heal well and fast.

Thanks for posting that, we all need to be reminded of things like that often.

Been there, done that but I ain’t gonna tell.

Take care

Well, today is probably the day to pull the stitches. Two weeks tomorrow since it happened and I was supposed to wait 7-14 days. My daughter, who works in the medical field will probably do the clipping. Haven't been back in the shop because of a big bandage that gets in the way.
:shake:

One thing I never thought about was the strings on my sweatshirt hood. I was told that is a big :nono: cause they can get caught and reel me in like a big fish. That would really suck.

:cursing: OWEEE!!! :cursing: That sends chills down my spine.
We all do dumb stuff and sometimes get away with it.
In your shop SPEED Kills. :nono:
Stay Safe and heal soon.
Dusty

We had a Safety Meeting at work a few months back about that very same issue .It showed a picture of a guy that got the string on his "hoodie" wound up in a grinder which sucked the grinder up into his face! Not a pretty sight.

Well, my daughter cut my stitches out this morning, so I am back to a "somewhat" normal finger, except the tendons are gone and I can't bend it at the first joint
:shake: :youcrazy: .

Especially in my line of work, that's the first thing I'll lose when I get a new one. Wedding rings are another accident waiting to happen. :shocked2:
