I have seen some butcher knives(new) that appear to have the makers name on the side of the blade, is there a good way aside from grinding to get this off, maybe in a process to age, patina, or giving that crusty almost case colored appearance, any suggestions? I believe they are Russel, I don't want lettering to be visable but don't want to put in the asame time it takes to make a new knife to remove the preint, TIA

Hey tg, funny thing I just bought an old butcher knife at a gun show, it is a bull nose knife 15" long with a 10" blade. No markings are visible on the old blade I was just wishing it had some markings so I could identify it. It looks like an old Russell (and others for sale on Ebay. Wish I had some ideas for you on your knife.

Here is what I do with a russel GR knife blank. first i will use fine sand paper and take the lettering off. make sure the blade is clean. take you some clorax and som ewater and boil it put the blade in the mix while its boiling. it will give the apperance of damascus. or just plain mustard will stain it. or a patato will work . you might just try browning. I have also used brass black, that looks cool. whatever they all work. and my opinion is that those GR blades are about the best you can get for the money GOOD LUCK

Many holes, I didn't know if it was a typo or perhaps I'm just behind times but what is "som ewater", I'm serious it sounds interesting and I would like to try it. I used onion and it worked fairly well but kind of splotchy.

Most markings are done with an acid ink.You can remove it by rubbing with a cold blueing coumpound which will give you a slighly bued area. Then removethe bluing with steel wool or scotch bright.

Thanks guys, it looks like a lot of the methods I use to add some patina to a barrel will do the job on a knife as well, thanks again
