Kaintuck, I'm at the butt plate screwing stage talk to me about that tapered drill. Not sure what your using. got a picture and how you using it that makes it mo-better? I wish I worked as fast and clean as you guys do.

When I ordered my screws, they also listed the drills and collets for each size of wood screw. If you are putting a wood screw in wood tables, you put the counter sink onto that correct bit, set the depth, lock all the set screw locks, and the it will taper drill the hole, counter sink for the head.
These are tapered drills specifically for the size of screw, so that the shank of the screw has clearance, and the threads bite into the wood, no more broken metal screws in a nice stock!!!
For small screws like PB a 1/16 bit is still used.....but for those big or long screws.....a taper screw bit is the way to go!
Blacksmith bolt.com
Then counter sink the brass parts is just my homedepot 5fluted countersink.....I don't use the wood countersink on brass~
Thank you for the positive comments.....but it's a group here that has expanded my abilities and resources!

Either set works. I am still using a old fashioned set I bought 30 yrs ago. Nothin fancy, but it works. And only time I use one is if I am dead sure i may break one. Normally I just drill a small hole for the threaded part & a partial shank size hole for the shank, lube the threads & hole & go on. I can't remember the last time I broke one off in a stock, but been many many years.

I can Feel... when it is going too tight, back out & redrill before it breaks.
