I'm building a rifle with a stock of dense red maple. I have used Qahkon Bay Aquafortis in the past and have ended up with different a color on each project. It had always gone darker than what I was wanting. I am thinking of trying stain this time. I am looking for a finish that will have a redish glow with gold high lights. Any sugestionson which stain I woild want to start with Honey Maple, Nut Brown, or Maple? Can they be mixed to get the desired result?

I believe laural Mt. has a cherry stain that has a medium redish tint. It showes off the figuring in maple very nicely

This is stained with Dangler's Dark Brown and Laurel Mt. Cherry mixed together. Very little Cherry as is is very Red and very strong.

Rick,

If AqF stain left your stock color too dark, you can sand it back slightly to lighten as long as you do this before applying the oil finish. This becomes difficult once oil has been appliedas you will not be able to recolor any areas that you sand too much. Scotch bright, steel wool or even wet sand paper can be used to lighten.

For the red color, you can do a two stage staining by putting english red first, then sanbding it back slightly and then going over this with your chosen top color. Experiment on scrap or areas that will not show.
