Question, in the instructions I received for the LM browning solution they mention "washing soda". What is this? Baking soda?
Thanks for your help.

No. Washing soda is Sodium Carbonate. Baking Soda is Sodium Bicarbonate. Look for washing soda in the laundry isle. Arm & Hammer also packages it, but it reacts to metal MUCH differently than baking soda. Thay are not interchangable.

It shouldn't make any difference. They both make up alkaline solutions when dissolved in water. It's the pH that neutralizes the browning solution. The instructions that came with my bottle of LM degreaser and browner says to use baking soda. Dilute lye should do the same thing. I washed my rifle with baking soda and it turned out just fine.

I don't want to hijak this thread, but I thought some might be interested in my experiences with LM Degreaser and Browning solution.

The first coat turned the barrel an ugly mottled color. I let the barrel set in my bathroom with a hot steam humidifier running on the high setting. The humidifier made it feel like a sauna. I'm not sure, but this may have produced a darker brown, which I prefer over a lighter chocholate brown. The next coat wasn't much better. The third coat started turning it a lighter brown color, but there was still some uneveness in the color. The Fourth coat started evening out the color and it started turning it darker. The fifth and last coat turned it darker yet, and evened out the color to my satifaction. I have posted a picture of the results a few threads down. I would use it again. It was pretty easy to use and I'm pleased with the results.

Yup, I used baking soda, it seems to have worked just fine. If you use LMF you will get good results if follow the instructions.

Ive used baking soda on all 3 of the guns I browned worked ok . I uesd the LMF browning sol in this way It does vary from the instrucions . First coat goes on I"ll wait maybe 5 to 6 hrs for the 2nd coat same for the 3rd and if you need it the 4th try to coat in 1 smooth even pass . As stated above you can do this in the bath room if the other half dont fuss, with more humidity it will work some better I do not card off the parts like the instuctions say I found my way works to my liking just fine and when pepole see my rifle and shotgun they always seem to like the metal finish.
