Thanks Labonte, et al for the info- the steel blade welded to an iron tang or tang with bolster-I'm familar with that but maybe I misunderstood the post. To me it sounded like the back of the blade was also was iron with a thin steel strip put into a slit- which ended up being the edge- In other words the whole thing- blade, bolster, and tang were iron except for a little bit of steel that made up the edge- maybe I'm just not getting it straight on that part.
And- of course what's most important...if such knives have been found in North America???
