I just got some lead sheets that (supposedly) came from hospital X-Ray room shielding, and I was just wondering if it might have retained some radioactivity? I would expect that there would be strict EPA policies regarding disposal if it was hazardous?
Maybe a dumb question, but I've asked dumb questions before. :haha:

It is safe. The lead doesn't absorb radioactivity, it blocks the radiation (emitted energy).

I work in EHS at a large University, there is absolutely no radiation danger.

I use x-ray shielding lead and only a few parts of me glow green. :rotf:

Seriously, it is fine to use -- I have used these for a long time.

if it holds true where it came from...
you will have some of the best lead you will ever come across.
I only have about 50 pounds of that stuff left!

I worked in X-Ray for over 45 years. Most or all of the lead I've ever used came from an X-Ray Department in one way or another. The lead counterweights of junked machines is sometimes available. Nuclear Medicine facilities have containers made of pure lead that are great for casting balls too.

If you shoot at night, you may see a green glow, on the ball, that you shot....look careful, or you might miss it.
You might see it better if you get someone to shoot it at you......Nah..that wouldn't be such a good idea....would it?
I have shot that stuff for many years..great casting material.
Except, every once in a while, when I look down, I do believe I can see slight glow on may balls?
Best Regards
Old Ford

Well, that's good news.
I got a sheet of it yesterday that musta weighed between 60 and 70 pounds, and the guy said to come and get more when I ran out.
Seems to be great stuff like y'all said. I cast 900 round balls yesterday and 250 this evening.

I'll keep a close watch for the glowing balls! :shocked2: :applause:

Them glow in the dark genies, git stuck in lead and can't git out. :shake:

I shoot PRB @ candles @ night @ 25, as long as Miss Beth next door nows before. She leaves and goes out of town every year for a week to a sister (she's older and a friend, I watch her (back/stuff/property) and she watches mine, hill neighbors)...it's the only week I have all year to shoot @ night. It's fun if the wind is dead calm.
The old timers had to do it to eat at times I'm sure. I might as well be as prepared as they were. my.02 on lead safety
