I just saved a friend from a fate worse than (and probably including) death! He found a lot of old auto batteries and was going to melt the lead out of them. In the early 70’s battery lead composition was changed to include calcium to give the batteries extended life. When calcium mixes with antimony it forms a poisonous gas.
This warning is well worth repeating to save a few unwary souls. The hot set up is to find your lead elsewhere.

welchro, thanks from the rest of us leadmelting types. these batteries wander in and out of "transfer facilities" (we used to call them dumps or landfills)... they contain all manner of nasty chemistry, and you're right, the gasses released are highly toxic. (much more so that lead fumes). most dumps have an annual 'amnesty day' where you can turn in this sort of stuff NQA so it doesn't end up in the water table.

thanks again

Why not take the old auto batteries to the scrap yard & turn them in for cash or soft lead?
