I have one that leaks too. Where do I find the video tutorial on relining a canteen by Jas Townsend? I would like to see this. Eldo

It really is quite simple. Get some bees wax or brewers pitch, melt it on the stove (only an once or 2 will be sufficient), pour it into the canteen, and slosh it around real good, and port the excess out. After a while, fill the canteen, check for leaks, and repeat if necessary.

And rememember to not leave a canteen lying in the hot sun. It doesn't take much to soften beeswax!

Thanks jbg, I think I'll get some brewers pitch and try to fix my canteen that way. It seeps and there are some rust holes in it. Tastes funny when you have water in it. I got it at a real good price but didn't know about the rust till later. Thanks for the tip. Eldo

I've been making a few leather canteen's here lately & have been using bee's wax. It's not as brittle as brewer pitch & impart's no foul taste.

I use parafin wax to occasionally reseal my wood canteen and I know others with leather canteens who do the same. Not sure how well either wax or brewers pich would work on a metal canteen since it may not adhere to the smooth surface. Never know until you give it a try.

Brewer's Pitch will work fine on metal canteens, as it is a natural Pitch, and acts no differently than a petroleum based pitch will around metal. It will taste a lot better, however! :shocked2: :rotf: :hmm:

Paul,

You misinterpreted my post. My point wasn't whether brewer's pitch or wax were petroleum based or not. I was simply pointing out that wax would likely flake too easily off of metal. I have no experience with brewer's pitch...Does it dry hard or remain gummy?

I am positive your family Dr would tell you to NOT use any petrolium base substance to repair any type of food / water container.

Paraffin wax has been used for years when sealing home canned jams & jellies and I've never heard of anyone who came to any harm from it.
