I made a small, simple deerskin shot bag, 5" x 2" with a rawhide spout and wooden stopper. It holds 12 ounces of shot, more than enough for any of my hunts except doves. I usually carry only 6 ounces, or so. A day bag.

my bags, one contains .50 cal, and the other has .31 cal, but will hold 10 oz of shot, and the brass case cap is also a shot measure, 2 fills will give 1 oz(approx) of #4. made from suede scraps, sinew, copper pipe and the small bag has the neck made from a brass case, 8 x 56mm. i don`t have a muzzle loader shotgun, but soon.

By shot bag, do you only mean the leather flasks posted above, or do you mean the 18th century term - what is often called a shooting bag or possibles bag?

Here's my shot pouch, a small shoulder bag loosely inspired by the Lemuel Lyman belt pouch. It's pretty simple - only three pieces of leather, including an inner divider that also acts as a welt.

I stained it with vinegaroon. After about three years of use the color has mellowed to a slightly mottled dark brown/black.

I know I shouldn't but I just buy antiques off that auction site and use them until they wear out. They are not particularly expensive if you avoid the big names and there seems to be a never ending supply :idunno:

How many have you gone through? I imagine with proper care there would be little worry of wearing them out.

I looked through my junk box and I think I am on number 4. The leather can be glued, it is when you lose/break the spring or one of the shutters that you start to need a replacement.

I understand the pleasure of using the originals and do that sometimes, but if those aren't available, or aren't your thing, there are replicas of 19th-century type leather ones which won't set you back many shekels. They work very well, too.

I don't have an original shot bag but occasionally use a J.W. Hawksley flask for bunny hunting.

The shot snake holds about three lbs. of shot but is a PAIN when pushing under milli-flori rose or through blackberry brambles. I haven't used it in years.
