Does anyone have experience shooting these REAL slugs? I use PRB in my rifle (.50cal) and RB and lately Lee conical in my revolvers (.44 Rem and ROA) have got both a .45 mold and a .50 mold for the REAL. I plan on casting with pure lead, or what I have (old pipe fittings) is pure lead I believe.

I have been shooting them with good results. I tried to harder lead to get the diameter I wanted to get them to fit very snug. They shoot great but I have to use a lubbed wad between the slug and the powder. Ron

Hi. Is it so, that it fill out the mold better if it is, a little tin in the lead? I shoot REAL bullets cast of weelweights, in my Trapper pistol, with great result. Will i get smaller dia on the bullet, with pure lead?

Yes, a bit of tin will help the cast fill out better and thus will cast a couple of thou larger. With hollow base slugs you will get much better slugs with fewer rejects and can cast at lower temps. A small amount of tin, like 1 part tin to 60 or 80 parts lead, adds very little hardness to the slug.

Thanks. It is a little hard,To seat the bullet with your thumb. But, when you get the bullet into the rifling, its easy to push it down the bore with the ramrod. I get best result with a wad.
It seems, that it shoots good with any powder load. That REAL bullet, is realy good.

Mr. Blizzard of '93,
We have used the REALs to some extent. However, in our toys, only the ones cast from pure lead shot accurately. They also load the easiest.
Interesting the way some firearms may or may not have a preference, one way or another.
Best Wishes

I have tried to get some type of group with the REAL bullets, with no results. I have two .54 GPRs and both will shoot a 2 foot group at 50 yards. I tried the 380 grain and the 300 grain. I know the GPR has a 1 in 60 twist, but when they first came out they said the REAL will shoot well in a prb barrel. Hopefully, my friend with his newly aquired .54 CVA Hawken, with 1 in 48 twist, will have better luck.

Thanks for the encouragement, I'm going to find out if my 1-48 twist barrel will shoot them well, I have read mostly good reports.

Maybe it is so, that the REAL bullet like fast twist better. I have 1/16 Twist in my Trapper pistol, in 45 cal. 10 inch barrel. So 1/48 twist might work just fine.

Blizzard,
A lot of folks in here have said they have gotten excellent results with them through their Great Plains Hunter (1 in 32 twist). Good luck and let us know how it turns out  .

I have used the lee REAL slugs with ballestoil wads in my 1-21 tyron .45 and a 1-48 .50 with both target and hunting loads and find them both very accurate. last year the .45 REAL knocked a large florida feral hog right into my frezer!! YUM! They will not shoot worth a darn in a 1-66 or 1-72 twist rifle-SPUD

Yes, try a little diferent powder loads, it depends what you are going to do with your rifle.Shooting paper, or hunt.I am sure you could find, both a paper load, and a hunting load that should works fine. That 1/48 twist of yours, should shoot both rounds and bullets pretty good.

Lee REALS work great in my GPR with a hunter barrel, and my 61 Springfield musket, however my Zouave is a tack driver at 50 yards with holes touching each other, but at 100 yards it opens the group up 2 feet and keyholes most shots.

My GPH .50 gets 1.4" 3 shot groups at 80 yards with REALs lubed with Lee Liquid Allox only over 60gr of Swiss 3Fg, saliva patch swipe after each shot. Pure lead cast between 326 & 330gr, sorted in batches to be within 1gr deviation.

Which REAL? There are two moulds in 50 cal. The 320 gr should shoot well in the faster twist rifles, but you'd think the 250 gr mould would shoot well in the slower twist rifles. Buffalo ball-ets are 245 gr and shoot well out of slow twist guns. What do you guys think? :hmm:
