Anybody shoot the Lee 50 caliber (or other cal.) target mini's in their 1-48 twist rifle?

If so, please provide specifics to how you do it - what kind of accuracy, etc.

Do you use a felt wad under them? They have that hollow skirt... do you fill that with lube? What lube do you use - bore butter or something like spg? Powder load?

That kind of thing.

I know that patched ball is more period, but I'm wondering about match winners

I also would like this should I decide to hunt with it - much better SD than a round ball.

I have fired the.50 lee target mini in 1:20-1:48 twist with light charges of 50/60 gr.ffg . using Bore butter and found them very accurate. My last Michigan whitetail was downed with a lee .50 mini .For match winning form though nothing beats a tightly patched roundball or a creedmore type slug with a ballestol wad.lube the target mini on the outside and check the skirt for any damage.-SPUD

Thanks for the feedback there.

I was thinking I might have a "does all" bullet with the target mini.

The real thing is the sights - if I file the front sight (I have a german silver replacement blade in place) to zero the target mini say at 100 yards, about where will an accurate patched ball load go?

I suppose that depends on the rifle?

Perhaps I should just let my kentuky rifle be my target pole and leave the deer slaying to my TC... that way I can just use the round balls in the kentuk and don't worry, be happy.

I filled the hollow bases and lubed the grooves with Crisco. Loaded them over a 3/8" greased felt wad and 50 to 60 grains of FFFg. This gave me 1.5" groups at 50 yards. Very easy to load, pleasant to shoot, accurate and no wiping between shots. I'm still experimenting with "harder" lubes and Lee Liquid Alox, with and without filling the bases. That's in a T/C GreyHawk and a New Englander, both with 1:48 barrels. So far, the Crisco-packed bullets with the grease cookie is the most accurate, but the empty-based, Alox-lubed loads work pretty well if I swab between shots. Crisco was, by far, the best "grease". Any load over 65 grains of FFFg blew the group all over and any load of FFg didn't seem to work well at all.

Experimenting was fun, but I'll go with PRB's and 75 grains of FFFg for hunting...less screwing around.

Again, thanks for the feedback.

I have some home-made lube that I brewed up a couple of years ago - beeswax, lard and olive oil with a little peppermint - is very similar to SPG lube.
