I am left handed person as subject matter states I love my old smoke poles more than can guess some of them are hand-me-downs from hunters long since past, but all built for a right handed persons. I have tried shooting them but to me I just cannot see the front sight any sugguestion. no I am not going to get rid of them because they remind of past family members, just want to know if there is any way I can help strengthen my non domaint eye enough to shoot the accurity?

You can't strengthen your eye, but you can make it your dominant eye. Just close your right eye. With a little practice it will get easier and feel more natural. I occasionally shoot my right-handed guns left handed, and that works for me.

1. Mount the firearm as though you are shooting. Sight keeping both eyes open.

2. While you are wearing the spectacles with which you shoot, have your helper mark your
lens at the spot/point you tell him your eye focuses on the exact point of aim.

3. Remove spectacles and clear the mark. Using translucent tape (frosted), apply a small piece - 1/4-inch square is more than enough - on the spot where your mark had been.

4. Put your spectacles on and go shoot.

What you have done is reduce visual acuity predominantly at your dominant eye's shooting focus. You can still see clearly for nearly your entire field of view, but now your dominant shooting eye is the right one (pun kind've intended). Since the tape is removable, infinitely renewable, and inexpensive, you have no reason to avoid trying.

Hope this helps.

+1 to what necchi said. i'm so left-handed i can't pick my nose righty & all my guns are right-handed. i shoot them lefty & have never had a problem. luck & have a good'en friend, bubba.

Shoot lefty, it's Not as hard as it first seems. I'm right handed and left eye dominate and I shot right handed my whole life. After several eye operations my right eye is just about useless the front post is just fuzzy. I love shooting rifles both BP and my service rifle so if I wanted to keep shooting I had learn to do it lefty. I went to an Appleseed event and treated it like I'd never picked up a rifle in my life. Shot the course lefty and made a Rifleman's score. I'm 48 so you can teach middle aged dogs new tricks.

I know of a fellow who was right eye dominant, but an accident left him with only his left eye, so he just lays his head across the stock to bring his left eye into line with the sights. He started doing this with his modern guns, so when he started BP he kept up the habit. Looks a bit uncomfortable, but he shoots well.

Probably easier to simply shoot them on the left side..., after all, a right handed shooter with a flintlock SxS shoots the left lock on the right side and it's not a problem, so as suggested why not shoot a right-hand lock on the left side?

Practice shooting both left and right. You never know when you'll need it. My last year deer kill, was with my left side hold scope and all because deer came from the right and no way to use dominant side to hit him. I am sorry I did not read the question carefully. I think practice is the way closing the eye you need to .

That reminds me of my son. He can't zip his pants with his right hand.
I found a Left-hand Lyman for my son. I'm right handed but left-eye dominant. I have no problems shooting right or left.

I am right handed and shoot right handed normaly. I have been having problems with my right eye for several months. I can shoot a cap lock left handed but I have not tried a Flintlock yet. I do not know if the flash will be too much or not.

see the sites...then no see flash! left or right makes no difference to me..I'm a lefty, but no problems shootin a gun built for a right hander..biggest thing is concentrate on target an sights...
