Thanks for all the advice on a loading block. I made this one from maple and the short starter is from apple tree that I cut down a couple years ago. Use Aqua Fortis for stain. Worked great! Had to be a little careful with the torch to keep from burning edges. Heat gun worked better. Finished with Tru-oil. This is with 2 coats. Another piece of apple with just one coat looked better as finish soaked in and produced less of a finish and shine. Oh well, at least it's water proofed.

I had at first just a section on top of the short starter where a branch came out for a handle. Decided that It could be a ram's head. So, I did that. Don't know if anything like this is historically correct or not. Haven't seen anything like it before. But, I like it. With such a fancy short starter, maybe I should fancy up the loading block with some carving:)

The picture/link didn't work, so I took the liberty of bringing it out for all to see...

Nice starter to go along with the block...

Nice Job.. I will have to look around the wood shop and see what I have. All I would need is a five hole model for my hunting needs. That's all I ever carry otherwise..

real nice..

DN,

BOTH look great!; but how ya gonna get them lemons in thar???

:blah:

That my friend is one fine looking short starter ... don't worry about it being pc ... you'll get many different opinions on that subject ... personally, I feel you have done something that one of our forefathers would have done ... they were always using their knife to skrimshaw or carve something.
